As a Mid-Market Credit Analyst, you will support the growth of our Corporate Banking portfolio by delivering high-quality credit analysis, risk assessment, and ongoing portfolio monitoring for UK mid-market clients (typically with turnover between £10 million and £250 million
You will play a key role in ensuring disciplined credit decision-making, robust risk management, and alignment with the bank's risk appetite, while partnering with Relationship Directors to support lending opportunities across a broad range of sectors.
This role requires a strong understanding of the practical application of risk management within the UK mid-market corporate segment. You will contribute to shaping our Corporate Banking strategy and credit risk framework for this new proposition, ensuring sustainable growth through sound credit policies, portfolio oversight and effective risk management.
The successful candidate will be an experienced credit professional who is excited by the opportunity to help establish and develop a new Corporate Banking Credit Team and play a pivotal role in its long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Analysis & Underwriting
- Conduct detailed credit assessments on new and existing clients, from initial opportunity screening and early-stage reviews through to full credit paper submission.
- Analyse historic and forecast financial performance, including cash flow, leverage, liquidity and debt servicing capacity.
- Identify, assess and, where appropriate, recommend mitigants for key credit risks.
- Prepare clear, concise and well-reasoned credit recommendations for approval by sanctioners and credit committees.
- Sanction proposals within an individual delegated lending authority.
- Assess transaction structures and the suitability of products, including:
- Term lending
- Revolving credit facilities
- Asset-based lending
- Derivatives
- Transactional banking facilities and limits
Financial & Risk Analysis
- Evaluate key credit metrics, including Net Debt/EBITDA, interest cover and liquidity ratios.
- Conduct scenario analysis and stress testing, including downside cases.
- Support internal risk rating assessments and IFRS 9 staging considerations.
- Identify emerging risks, key mitigants and early warning indicators within the portfolio.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner closely with Relationship Directors to structure transactions that balance risk and return.
- Work collaboratively with Product Credit teams throughout the credit approval process.
- Liaise with Risk, Compliance and Operations teams to support efficient deal execution.
- Provide analytical support to credit sanctioners, committees and other decision-making forums.
Process Improvement & Governance
- Support the development and implementation of credit risk policies and risk appetite statements.
- Ensure compliance with internal credit policies, governance standards and delegated authorities.
- Contribute to enhancements in credit processes, templates and operating efficiency.
- Maintain high-quality documentation and robust audit trails.
- Proactively identify, manage and monitor watchlist clients.
Market & Sector Awareness
- Maintain a strong understanding of UK mid-market trends, sector dynamics and competitor activity.
- Support portfolio analysis and the development of sector insights.
- Monitor macroeconomic and geopolitical developments and assess their impact on the UK mid-market corporate sector.
Skills, Experience & Knowledge
Essential Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics or a related discipline. Relevant professional qualifications are advantageous.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience within Corporate or Commercial Banking credit risk, portfolio management, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of credit risk management, portfolio management and underwriting within the UK mid-market segment.
- Experience developing and implementing risk appetite frameworks, credit policies and portfolio strategies.
- Knowledge of impairment methodologies and IFRS 9 considerations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to distil complex information into clear recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
