What is the purpose of the team?

The Team is responsible for underwriting credit applications with exposures up to £150,000 ensuring adherence to the Bank's Risk Appetite and relevant Lending Policy and Standards.

Description of role and key responsibilities

The key requirement for this role is to oversee the work of the Flow Underwriting team developing a true performance culture that maximises the performance of the Team and creating a satisfying and enjoyable working environment.

Ensure that all underwriting is in line with AFG's stated Risk Appetite and is undertaken in a timely manner that helps make a real difference in differentiating IAF from its competition.

Key part of AFG Credit management team and advocate for promoting a balanced and risk aware culture across the wider business.

Development of AFG's automated credit underwriting capability.

What are the main responsibilities?

  • Oversight of the day to day management of the Flow Underwriting Team, including the mentorship, development, motivation of the Team.
  • Oversight of all aspects of lending and credit risk covered by the Flow Underwriting Team and as part of AFG Credit Management responsibility for the quality of the wider AFG business portfolio.
  • Managing bad debt losses in line with AFG's risk appetite and budgets from time to time
  • Maintain an effective People Strategy; collaborating with People and Organisations, recruiters and personal networks to ensure the business is well place for both BAU and growth
  • Build and retain strong personal relationships with key stakeholders – both internally and externally.
  • Act as a role model in promoting a strong learning culture.
  • Enhance operational efficiency by improving current processes 
  • Support Sales activity by joining client and introducer visits on a regular basis.
  • Develop availability and use of performance data 
  • Remain fully up to speed with all relevant legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Deputise for the Head of Credit and Risk, AFG.

What core skills and knowledge do we look for?

  • Regulatory knowledge as applicable to role (compulsory)

  • Proven experience of Asset Finance underwriting with relevant experience in small ticket financing as part of a wider credit underwriting capability (compulsory)
  • Ability to lead teams, create a positive working environment where people want to work and be able to maximise their potential
  • Ability to manage through others high volumes of new business proposals delivering consistent outcomes in line with agreed SLA's.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to manage internal and external stakeholders always exhibiting a positive and balanced approach.
  • Act as a role model in terms of continuous professional development and a strong advocate of developing a genuine learning culture.
  • Proven experience to drive initiatives to ensure a high team morale and performance culture with focus on aspects such as inclusion, diversity, training and development.
