Description of role and key responsibilities

 

Role Definition

·         A role that focusses on operational performance and control.

·         The role partners the COO, assisting in the management and leadership of the business support and enablement teams.  More specifically, the role ensures that effective risk management is in place whilst also ensuring that the client is at the centre of everything we do and, by extension, that delivery against IBCI's and the respective teams' strategic objectives are met, including but not limited to digital transformation.

·         A core focus of this role is to develop, embed and maintain an effective first line of defence control framework in the operating space, ensuring excellence is maintained across all functions.

 

Key Responsibilities

·         To ensure the business support and enablement teams have sufficient capability (competency and capacity), including appropriate team structures to deliver against their objectives.  This can include recruitment, training and performance management.

·         To be accountable for operational processes with regard to how they may be improved from a risk, efficiency (productivity) and client service perspective.  Integration and automation will be key.

·         To ensure an effective first line of defence is in place with a particular focus on higher risk functions, including but not limited to client onboarding and lifecycle management.  This will include oversight and performing the control function itself.

·         To collaborate with other team leaders with a view to improving IBCI's risk management, productivity and to deliver against strategic objectives.

·         Aligned to the above, to act as a ‘Senior User' to IBCI's digital transformation programme which includes, inter alia, ensuring the appropriate alignment and prioritisation of initiatives and that user needs are met; ultimately being the voice of the business.

·         To work closely with IBCI's Business Change team, having joint business responsibility for IBCI's banking and online client platforms, ensuring they remain fit for purpose.

·         As and when required, own and deliver on adhoc projects, which could be across the wider operations space

·         Team management skills, including coaching, development, feedback and appraisal, and identifying opportunities for succession planning and delivery of excellence with individuals and teams

·         Excellent relationship management skills – regulator, auditors, suppliers, Group staff, internal staff.  Established and good professional relationships with counterparts within IBCI and the wider Investec Group is an integral part of the role

·         Ability to share knowledge and build team relationships with relevant counterparts within the Investec Group

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – to be able to inform and influence both orally and in writing

·         Challenging yet non-confrontational.

·         An inquisitive and enquiring mind

·         Actively considers the wider picture, identifying patterns and connections between issues and situations that may not be obviously related

·         IT literate (high level knowledge of basic IT infrastructure and applications), including developing banking systems

·         Persistence, an eye for detail and ability to complete projects within specified deadlines.

·         Ability to operate independently and escalate appropriately with confidence

 

Knowledge

·         At least 5 years prior managerial experience, preferably leading a risk or operations team

·         At least 10 years banking experience, preferably private banking, business banking or corporate banking

·         Extensive knowledge of operations, enabling the improvement of processes and understanding and assessing related risks

·         Prior experience in risk management, especially operational risk and in engaging with audit (internal or external) functions would be beneficial

·         Good understanding of financial management

·         Have a good understanding of the regulatory environment including the regulations, rules and guidance and their implications relevant to the job and to follow all applicable internal compliance considerations including appropriate processes, policies and procedures

·         Knowledge of our organisation and the environment in which it operates
