Role: Portfolio Manager (Discretionary Desk)

Location: Leeds

Team Description

The Discretionary Desk based in Leeds provides portfolio management services to the Leeds and Sheffield offices. The Team manages a significant number of portfolios for private clients, trusts, pension funds, charities and corporate clients.

Role Purpose

This is an entry level investment management role. The successful candidate will be expected to achieve the appropriate qualifications to progress through the Investment Management career path.

To support the provision of high quality, professional investment management services to the client relationship managers. This will involve learning about all aspects of portfolio management.

Primary Accountabilities 


  • Develop knowledge of, and comply with, all regulatory and organisational requirements / procedures.
  • Liaise with client relationship managers to ensure the business meets client objectives.
  • Keep abreast of operational and administrative procedures.
  • Provide general administrative support to the team.

Investment Management Duties:

  • Construct portfolios using a range of asset classes to meet investment objectives as directed by a competent Investment Manager.
  • Build orders and place deals as directed by a competent Investment Manager.
  • Contribute ideas to the development of investment strategy on portfolios.
  • Build a good relationship with the client facing investment managers and ensure client's requirements are noted and executed
  • Monitor portfolio performance against objectives and benchmarks.
  • Prepare schemes to illustrate portfolios for potential new clients.
  • Regularly attend meetings with external fund managers, strategists and company management.
  • Liaise with the Central Research team on investment ideas.
  • Read financial press regularly and keep abreast of global investment themes.
  • Ensure skills and knowledge base is abreast of current developments.
  • Complete appropriate professional examinations (as detailed below).
  • Attend on-going professional training courses and events.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience Required

  • A strong interest in investment markets.
  • Competent at working to deadlines and managing time.
  • Flexible attitude to work in response to changing workloads and deadlines within the team.
  • Demonstrate good academic record
  • Exceptional focus and attention to detail
  • Good numerical skills
  • Highly IT literate with an ability to learn new systems.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of Fiscal and Pulse is desirable but not essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with client relationship managers.
  • Excellent telephone manner.

Qualifications Required

In order to develop and progress, the successful individual will be expected to pass the CISI Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) within 1 year of commencing the qualification. The IAD consists of Regulation & Professional Integrity, Investment Risk & Taxation and Securities.

Study will then commence on the CISI Chartered Wealth Management Qualification (CWMQ) which consists of Financial Markets, Portfolio Construction Theory and Applied Wealth Management. On completion of the Financial Markets module, the individual will be FCA registered.

On completion of the CWMQ, competence in Investment Advice and Investment Management will be assessed and providing this is satisfactory and meets the standards required, the individual will be signed off as competent.
