What does the team do?

The IW&I Operational Risk team is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of the IW&I operational risk management framework, policies and practices.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support and challenge senior management in meeting their responsibility for identifying and managing operational risk.
  • Engage with senior management on operational risk exposures and provide recommendations regarding mitigation.
  • Establish and promote an appropriate framework, policies and practices to identify, assess, measure, monitor and report operational risk.
  • Monitor the implementation of operational risk management and mitigation initiatives, including challenge and review of operational risk management practices.
  • Ensure that operational risk data is complete, accurate and timely.
  • Monitor emerging practices and stakeholder expectations and develop an appropriate response.
  • Facilitate the operational risk scenario assessment process.
  • Training and education of IW&I staff on relevant operational risk matters.
  • Ensure that relevant regulatory requirements are evaluated and complied with.
  • Escalate operational risk exposures to IW&I senior management and provide recommendations regarding mitigation.
  • Report to the IW&I Board or IW&I Board committees on the operational risk profile.
  • Prepare the relevant regulatory reports.

What does the role involve?

The Senior Operational Risk Manager is an integral member of the Operational Risk team and is responsible for carrying out activities designed by IW&I for the purpose of implementing an effective operational risk management framework to identify, measure, monitor, and control operational risks. The framework is designed to reduce inherent risks and prevent/minimise IW&I losses through preventative steps or actions.

  • Provide thought leadership within the Operational Risk team and wider Compliance & Risk department.
  • Proactively collaborate and co-ordinate risk activities with other assurance functions. I.e. CASS, Data Protection, Technology Risk, Compliance, Financial Crime and Internal Audit.
  • Establish, implement and maintain adequate policies and procedures designed to detect any operational risk of failure by the firm to comply with its obligations under the regulatory system, as well as associated risks, and put in place adequate measures and procedures designed to minimise such risks.
  • Monitor and, on a regular basis, to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of the measures and procedures put in place and the actions taken to address any deficiencies in the firm's compliance with its obligations.
  • Advise and assist the relevant persons responsible for carrying out regulated activities to comply with the firm's obligations under the regulatory system.
  • Implement appropriate plans, policies and procedures to ensure the effective delivery of the tasks which are to be completed by the Operational Risk Team.
  • Execute relevant operational risk framework components within the business. Including: risk assessments, KRIs, loss events, scenarios etc.
  • Provide robust review and challenge of risk exposures.
  • Investigate root causes of operational risks/events and provide support to mitigate risk.
  • Provide timely, relevant and accurate reporting to risk committees.
  • Promote a culture of operational risk awareness across IW&I.

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • Thorough understanding of risks and controls within a financial services company. Ability to advise on appropriate controls and risk mitigation.
  • Detailed knowledge of operational risk management methodologies and principles
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
  • Communication – ability to engage with a wide range of colleagues and articulately discuss / write report on various issue (verbal / written / presentation)
  • Challenge – ability to challenge multiple SMEs and management on a wide range of topics and risks
  •  Attention to detail – to pick up on errors and produce accurate work, with strong analytical capability
  • Organised – work to multiple deadlines yet maintain flexibility through the workday
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills
  • To act with integrity at all times and embrace the philosophy of treating our customers fairly

What other attributes would be helpful?

  • At extensive experience within an operational risk or similar risk role
  • Previous experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Relevant tertiary education i.e. BCom/BSc Degree or similar.
